What is a Vision Statement?

by admin on August 13, 2009

A Vision Statement is simply a written document that describes where an organization is going and what it will look like when it gets there. It is the description of what the company hopes to achieve and what it is striving for. This is what gives an organization its direction and focus.

Organizations that don’t have a clear, articulate vision have the potential to veer off course and loose focus of its goals and priorities. In order for employees to truly partner with a business, and help them achieve their strategic goals, they need to understand why they are there and where the organization is going.

As an example, a grocery store may begin focusing on DVD rentals and put so much effort into that, that they loose sight of their main business and neglect those things that would enhance and grow their core business.

Example Vision Statement:  “ABC Groceries will be the area leader in customer service, high quality food products and specialty food lines”.

In my article 5 Steps to Strategic Planning, I go through the steps in a visioning process. It is very important that every business take the time, and put the thought into writing a vision statement and displaying it on the wall for all employees to see.
