Human resource management is a science that has evolved over the years. It’s kind of like physicians. In the old days, there was one kind of doctor who took care of all kinds of ailments. Today physicians specialize in all areas of medicine.
The same is true for Human Resources Management. It used to be “personnel” management that dealt with hiring and firing employees. Today’s HR has evolved into a more comprehensive management of the whole person. Like medicine, there are many specialties in HR management, including compensation and benefits, training and development, employee relations, recruitment, staffing management, diversity, labor relations and leadership development.
Because of this expanse of expertise and knowledge, there is a lot to learn and keep up with. Laws change, trends change, employee issues change and organizations change. Change is the constant so keeping informed and up-to-date on industry changes can help keep organizations current.
Following are some websites that I’ve found that have helpful HR articles on them. Many have several article categories and provide a wealth of free HR management information.
Another resource is the Society for Human Resources Management. SHRM is a Human Resources professional organization that supports all functions of HR. They provide services such as training, certifications, awards, job listings, speakers, tools and templates. There is a limited amount of free information on their website but for an annual joining fee, you have access to content written by seasoned professionals all over the country.
Managing employees is an ever challenging responsibility but having good networks, professionals to share knowledge and best practices makes the task a little easier.
