Advantages of Temporary Employees

With the economic downturn and massive layoffs in the last 18 months, many organizations are supplementing their staffing needs by using temporary employees. One of the advantages of high unemployment is that the talent pool is better qualified. This is also true for temporary workers found through temporary agencies.

Being a temporary employee can be advantageous for both the employee as well as the employer. I had a friend who temped for years until she found an organization she wanted to work for and eventually got hired there. Having said that, most temporary agencies have some sort of clause in their agreement about recruiting and hiring their employees. Typically employees can be hired either for a fee or after a waiting period.

So what are the advantages of using temporary employees?

  • Temporary employees can be available when needed and let go without notice when a project is completed.
  • Compensation costs can be much less. Even though you typically pay a higher hourly rate, the other benefit costs of an employee are not there.
  • Many organizations use temporary employees on a trial basis to “test” their ability to do the job and assess their compatibility with the organization.
  • Most temporary employees are motivated to make a good impression and have a good work ethic.
  • Temporary employment agencies can offer different levels of skills to meet the need of employer requests.
  • Temporary employees can be used for special projects that are difficult to get completed by other staff members.
  • Temporary employees can be used indefinitely or for a short period of time.

Other considerations:

  • When looking for a right fit in a temporary employee, ask to see a resume.
  • Check references like you would any other employee – call prior employers.
  • Do a background check – especially if your organization deals with children.
  • Most temporary agencies test applicants, so ask to see test results to ensure their skills are strong enough to do the job.
  • For best productivity results, make sure someone is available to orient, train and be available to answer questions.

Temporary employment agencies are a valuable resource that can be used to bridge the gap while the economy is recovering. If you do your due diligence, it can be a positive experience for all concerned.
